Beckett Simonon Cohen Loafer Review

Looking to stay casual but still classy?

The Beckett Simonon Cohen Loafer is a solid choice of shoe that will do exactly that, as this Beckett Simonon Cohen Loafer review will attest.

Beckett Simonon has a unique business model, to say the least. Besides using only ethically-sourced materials and ethical labor models, they only custom-make shoes. They don’t carry inventory, so your shoes aren’t made until you order them. That does mean a wait is involved, but it also means you aren’t subsidizing third parties in the supply chain.

As a result, you get a handmade shoe at department store prices. Not only that, you get an incredibly handsome set of footwear.

Beckett Simonon Does Things A Little Differently

The Beckett Simonon company does things a little differently than many other shoemakers. You see, even a number of supposedly “premium” shoe companies end up gouging the consumer in order to participate in the retail model. Additionally, not every shoe company cares about when, where and how their materials are sourced nor who makes them; the company comes up with designs and has factories make them, the labor force be damned.

The founders of Beckett Simonon wanted to do things differently. Their goal was to make a quality product from quality materials, with materials that were ethically sourced as well as ethical labor. They ensure this by sourcing leather and other materials from tanneries and other producers near their headquarters in South America, and by using only small family-run and fair labor factories in Colombia to produce their shoes.

Additionally, their shoes aren’t made in advance. If you order a pair of Cohen loafers or any other Beckett Simonon shoe, it gets made after you order it. Beckett Simonon offers designs on a month-by-month basis; the designs you see are what will be made over the next few months. Granted, designs come and go and the most popular models tend to have staying power.

Your shoes will take up to three months to arrive, unfortunately, but you get something for that.

Beckett Simonon doesn’t subsidize middlemen or distributors since they sell shoes direct to consumers. You aren’t paying Mens Wearhouse, Nordstroms, Macy’s or anyone else to warehouse their inventory. You’re paying for what you order.

This matters, as you’re getting a handmade shoe, made from ethically-sourced materials, from a small shop that pays their workers a fair wage. Normally, a shoe of the same quality would cost much more.

While Beckett Simonon shoes aren’t “cheap” at $199 per pair (typically they are priced at $300) you would normally pay $400+ or more for shoes of similar design and quality of construction and material.

Black Cohen Loafer Review

The Cohen Loafer is halfway between casual and stylish, as they are relaxed enough for lazy days around the house but certainly stylish enough for the office or any occasion short of a black tie.

Cohen loafers are made from a single piece of full-grain calfskin leather, in your choice of black, brown or Bordeaux, an almost oxblood-like reddish brown. Like most of Beckett Simonon’s shoes, the sole is attached by the Blake method, where the outer-sole is directly stitched to the insole.

The Blake method is typical of Italian fashion shoes; while not as sturdy as the Goodyear welt method (which would be preferred for work and outdoor boots for its durability) the Blake construction method allows for more flexibility and comfort.

The outsole is leather with a rubber heel, with a vachetta leather insole for astounding comfort. The outsole is also rebuildable, so you could – providing good care – potentially keep these shoes in working order for decades.  A sleeker toe box than many other loafers gives them a sharp appearance, and the saddle of the shoe is thinned to give them a sleeker look.

The Cohen loafer comes backed by a 1-year warranty, and the shoes come with a dust bag for clean storage.

Since not every design is offered year ’round, every moment is an opportunity to get a great pair of loafers for a great price, made from ethically-sourced materials and by fair labor. Few other dress shoe makers can attest to offer the same thing, and few – if any – can match the quality for asking price. Head over to beckettsimonon.com and check out their amazing leather shoes.
