Common Misconceptions About Vaping

misconceptions about vaping

Nowadays, it seems like there is a huge amount of misunderstanding regarding vaping all over everyday media. The worst part is that most of this content is created by people who don’t even vape, giving the term “vaping” a worse name than it deserves.

If you’re on the verge of quitting cigarettes or make the switch to vaping, but you’re unsure of whether or not to make this change – read on so that we can clear the air for you once and for all.

Myth #1 – Vaping is the same as Smoking Health-Wise

Doubters are usually quick to say that vaping is just as unhealthy as tobacco smoke. Put simply, that’s just not the case. Cigarettes are known to contain thousands of harmful chemicals (carcinogens, toxicants), which can wreak havoc to your lungs, the majority of your senses, and can damage your mouth cavity as well as your throat. What’s more, tobacco can also stain your fingers and your teeth, while the lingering smell of tobacco smoke catches onto your clothing and stays there for weeks, if not months at a time.

On the other side of the spectrum is vaping – a hobby which doesn’t produce nearly as bad of a smell as smoking contains far fewer chemicals, and is by far the healthier alternative between the two. In fact, e-cigarette vapor does not contain other harmful chemicals such as tar, cadmium, or carbon monoxide (actively found in the exhaust pipes of cars).

In fact, by making the switch from smoking to vaping, you’re actively removing thousands of harmful chemicals from entering your body that you’d be otherwise inhaling on a daily basis.

Myth #2 – Secondhand Vapor is Dangerous

Non-smokers often mistake the notion that secondhand vapor is the same thing as secondhand smoke – this couldn’t be further from the truth. Several studies on the effects of e-cigarette vapor have shown that inhaling secondhand smoke is way worse for you than being subjected to a secondhand vapor. In fact, one such study compared the chemical structure of normal indoor air, exhaled breath, and e-cigarette aerosol. The research had concluded that exhaled breath and the indoor air had more toxic organic chemicals than electronic cigarette vapor.

Myth #3 – Vapers Don’t Know What’s in Their E-Juice

Another scaremongering tactic aimed towards the vaping community is the following quasi-argument: most of the vapers don’t know what they’re inhaling through their electronic devices. Again, this myth is – plainly speaking – is just false.

For one, the labeling on cigarettes is far more mysterious (ingredient-wise) than the information that we currently have on e-cigarette labels. In fact, e-juice essentially contains four main ingredients which are clearly shown on almost every bottle. These ingredients are:

  • Propylene Glycol
  • Natural and Artificial Flavors (which are sometimes made of diacetyl and other diketones that tobacco cigarettes contain in far larger quantities than e-cigs)
  • Vegetable Glycerin
  • Nicotine

Vegetable glycerin and propylene glycol are currently utilized in a number of medical and food products, and are generally deemed safe to use. In fact, you’ve probably encountered both propylene glycol and vegetable glycerin in everyday products such as over-the-counter oral medications, food, beauty products, and more.

Admittedly, out of all of these ingredients, nicotine can become an addictive substance in some circumstances. However, if you compare nicotine to the other chemicals found in traditional cigarettes (tar, formaldehyde), it becomes crystal clear that this substance is far less dangerous than some anti-vapers would have you think. Plus, stores like Vaper Empire provide their customers with the option of including or not including nicotine into whichever e-liquid they decide to purchase.

Myth #4 – Vaping Products are Not Regulated

Before the FDA had the chance to establish its regulations on vaping, some individuals often cited anecdotal sources to label vaping as unsafe because the practice wasn’t regulated by the government. However, before the FDA applied its rules, the vaping industry was generally known to regulate itself. Some products were restricted for those who were 18 years or younger and e-juices with nicotine were clearly labeled. In fact, more and more vaping manufacturers make sure to follow the industry’s best practices and deliver both a high quality service and stellar products to their ever-growing customer base.

Myth #5 – E-Juice Contains Anti-Freeze

While this myth seems to be spreading like wildfire, this is probably one of the most far-fetched claims we’ve come across.. As it’s often the case with many of these vaping myths – the more bizarre the claim – the more followers the claim is likely to attract.

What vape juice does contain, however, is a substance called propylene glycol (as stated above) —  which is probably where all the anti-vapers got this idea from. Propylene glycol is used in anti-freeze, but it is not anti-freeze on its own. In fact, this ingredient can be found in a variety of everyday items, such as ice-cream and a large number of oral and topical medications. In addition, propylene glycol is regarded as safe for consumption in small doses and does not represent a hazard to your health.
