The Dude’s Guide to a Clean Apartment

The Best Way to Keep an Apartment Clean

The best part about moving out of your mom’s basement is that you get to live whatever way you want. It usually starts out with piles of clothes everywhere, empty cereal boxes on the counter, and leftover pizza boxes next to the trashcan, instead of in the trash can. It happens. There is no need to pretend you haven’t left your fair share of rotting salad in the fridge when no one was looking.

It’s all part of the coming of age story most young adult men go through.

It’s a rite of passage, if you will. But the day will come when you get tired of looking at old pizza boxes, and you get tired of living on take out and picking your dirty clothes off the floor. You’ll get wise to your inner dude’s desire to live in a really nice place and take pride in your home. It might not happen right away, but it will happen eventually.

So when you are ready to tackle your apartment and make it your home, you can start with a good scrub of each room, and all the surfaces in each room. A good deep clean is a great way to set the tone for the rest of your apartment living. Once you have your place spic and span you can probably get away with a weekly tidy job. Starting with a good base is the trick. Spend the time to get a good cleaning under your belt before moving on to the laundry. If you have any real wood furniture, you can clean it and extend the life of it using lemon oil, a natural moisturizer for wood – plus, it smells great.

Set up a system for getting your laundry done on a weekly basis.

It’s a pain in the butt, but you need clean clothes to get on with your life, so set up a good system for moving clean clothes to the closet and drawers, and moving dirty clothes to the laundry basket. And if you don’t want to bother with your own laundry, you can hire a laundry service to pick up your dirty clothes and return your clean clothes. It is more expensive than doing it yourself, but it is a good use of your money if you don’t have time, or if you don’t care to learn how to implement a system for yourself.

Another easy way to get a handle on your apartment so that you can keep it clean on a regular basis is to create a meal plan and grocery list that you can use to help you save money and time when preparing meals. Knowing what you are going to cook and when can help you minimize messes and cleanups, and wasted food. Get in the habit of cleaning up your cooking pots and dishes as soon as you are done of a meal and you won’t be faced with piles of dishes each day. As well, don’t eat in front of the television. All messes lead to the television.

Eat your meals at your table so that the mess is contained. It’s too easy to leave half eaten food and dirty plates on the coffee tables because you were too lazy to get up and put it away while watching the game.

Clean, plan, prep. A few easy things to make your home your castle.
